Barbaresco
Barbaresco is one of the world’s great expressions of Nebbiolo. Home to internationally renowned producers such as Gaja, Bruno Giacosa and Produttori del Barbaresco, the denomination has played a central role in establishing the global reputation of the Langhe’s finest wines. Although only around one-third the size of neighbouring Barolo, its influence has been far greater than its modest scale might suggest.
Sharing the same grape variety and many geological characteristics as Barolo, Barbaresco nevertheless has a distinctive personality of its own. The moderating influence of the River Tanaro, lower vineyard elevations and slightly warmer growing conditions (due to proximity to warm central Piemonte) mean that harvest typically takes place around a week earlier. Rainfall can be significantly lower, as rain comes from the west and falls first on the higher Barolo hills. The wines are renowned for their perfume, elegance and refinement, while retaining the structure and longevity that make Nebbiolo one of the world’s greatest wine varieties.
Harvests are typically one week earlier than in Barolo, and the ageing requirements are shorter; this does not mean that the wines do not age well in bottle. Today, some wines can be just as full-bodied and tannic as Barolo from some sites. Some wines can be enjoyed young, but the best examples age beautifully for decades.
The articles below explore Barbaresco through its producers, wines, vintages and history, providing an introduction to one of Italy’s most fascinating wine denominations.
