Sometimes a picture (or two) are worth a thousand words. At the recent Institute of Masters of Wine annual Claret tasting the ‘helpers’ all got a turn to pour on the First Growths table. In a vintage like 2009 this was a straightforward pleasure. Although massively concentrated and youthful, this year produced wines with so much attractive fruit that it was not difficult to appreciate the potential here. No Latour or Petrus, but apart from that all the big names were very much present. Given their current prices, this could be a first and last time experience!
It seems a bit presumptuous to have a ‘favourite’ wine among these titans, but I am very fond of the Graves and the slightly herbaceous notes of Haut-Brion.
